John Prine Receives Songwriters Hall of Fame Nomination

November 09, 2018

For over 45 years, John Prine has touched the hearts and souls of millions with his genuine, yet whimsical storytelling and signature brand of social commentary.

Downtown would like to congratulate Prine on his nomination for the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame, one of the most esteemed organizations to honor and champion the legacies of songwriters who have made significant contributions to global culture.

From his self-titled 1971 debut to this year’s The Tree of Forgiveness, he has given the world countless classic songs. He remains one of music’s most significant songwriters of our time, receiving the coveted BMI Troubadour Award, the Americana Artist of the Year Award, and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination in 2018 alone.

“Prine, 70, has never been the kind of artist to draw much attention to himself. But in his own unassuming way, he’s built one of the most impressive catalogs of any songwriter of his generation.” —Rolling Stone

Praised by music journalists and fellow musicians alike, John is an inspiration to songwriters old and new. His songs have been covered by hundreds of artists from Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, and Bonnie Raitt to Norah Jones, Jason Isbell, and R.E.M.

"Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about ‘Sam Stone’ the soldier junky daddy and ‘Donald and Lydia,’ where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that." —Bob Dylan

Prine has been recognized by the Grammy Awards eight times, winning twice, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. He also won the 2016 PEN/Song Lyrics Award. Downtown is proud to represent one of the most powerful, witty, and thought-provoking writers of our era.

Editor's Note: On January 12, 2019, The Songwriters Hall of Fame officially announced the impending induction of John Prine into their highly-regarded ranks. The organization's 50th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner will take place on June 13, 2019 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.
